Why FSC® Matters to Remail

Thoughtful design starts with thoughtful materials
Remail was founded to challenge the idea that greeting cards should be treated as disposable.
Our cards are designed to be reused: each one features a perforated fold and a postcard layout printed on the inside-left, allowing the recipient to detach the front and send it again.
But designing a more circular greeting card is not only about what the product can do after it has been received. It also means considering the materials used to make it, where they come from and how responsibly they have been sourced.
That is why every Remail card is printed on 100% recycled card stock and why our relationship with the Forest Stewardship Council® — better known as FSC — matters to us.
What is FSC?
FSC is an international organisation dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests.
The FSC system helps businesses and consumers identify forest-based materials that have been sourced in line with recognised environmental, social and economic standards.
You may already recognise the FSC label from paper products, packaging, books and stationery. It provides a clear way for customers to identify products whose forest-based materials meet FSC requirements.
For a paper-based product such as a greeting card, that reassurance is important.
Remail is an FSC promotional licence holder
Remail is an FSC promotional licence holder under licence number FSC® N004749.
This allows us to communicate our use of FSC-labelled products and explain what the label means to our customers and retail partners.
Where the FSC Recycled label appears on a Remail greeting card, it confirms that the forest-based materials used in that product are recycled.
For us, this is about more than displaying a familiar mark. It gives customers greater transparency around the materials used to make our cards and supports a trusted system for responsible forest management.
Why we use 100% recycled card
Using recycled card helps reduce reliance on virgin forest-based materials and keeps existing fibres in use for longer.
That principle closely reflects how we think about the greeting card itself.
Rather than treating recycling as the only sustainable outcome, we first design each card so that part of it can be reused. The recipient can retain the original handwritten message and detach the front to send again as a postcard.
When the card eventually reaches the end of its useful life, it is made from recycled paper-based material and can be recycled again where appropriate facilities exist.
This creates a simple hierarchy:
- Use the card as a greeting card.
- Reuse the front as a postcard.
- Recycle the paper-based material when it can no longer be used.
It is a practical example of circular design: keeping a product and its materials useful for as long as possible.
Recycled does not have to mean compromised
Sustainable materials should not come at the expense of how a greeting card looks or feels.
Our cards are printed on substantial, uncoated recycled stock selected to reproduce bold typography and original illustration while retaining a tactile, premium finish.
The result is a card that feels considered and well made, while reflecting the principles behind the product.
We want customers to choose a Remail card because they love the design and the sentiment. The recycled material, reusable format and FSC label provide additional reasons to feel confident about that choice.
Designing for circularity
At Remail, sustainability is not treated as a separate feature added at the end of the design process.
It shapes the product from the beginning.
We consider:
- whether the card can remain useful beyond its first exchange;
- whether existing materials can be used instead of virgin resources;
- how production and inventory decisions can reduce unnecessary waste;
- and how information about materials can be communicated clearly.
Our wholesale cards are produced in response to demand, helping us avoid printing unnecessary volumes and holding excess inventory.
Alongside the reusable format and recycled card stock, this forms part of a broader effort to make considered decisions throughout the product’s life.
Our FSC guest article
In March 2026, FSC UK published a guest article by Remail about our approach to reusable greeting cards and circular design.
The article explored why Remail was created, how the perforated postcard format works and why we chose to become an FSC promotional licence holder.
Being able to share our story through FSC was an important opportunity to explain that sustainability in greeting cards can involve more than choosing recyclable materials.
Materials matter, but so does the way the product itself is designed, used and ultimately reused.
A shared belief in thoughtful consumption
FSC’s work closely aligns with Remail’s belief that beautiful, meaningful products can also be made more responsibly.
Greeting cards carry personal messages and help people maintain meaningful connections. We do not believe that value should come at the cost of treating materials as disposable.
By combining original design, 100% recycled card stock, FSC-labelled materials and a format made to be sent again, we hope to demonstrate a more thoughtful approach to the category.
One card cannot transform consumer behaviour on its own.
But it can invite someone to pause before throwing it away and ask a simple question:
Could this be used again?
